Exploring Bali’s Waste Solutions: Environmental Engineering Students Visit TOSS Klungkung, PDU Mengwi, and TPS 3R Kedonganan University General
As part of the Waste Management course, students from the Environmental Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University, carried out field visits to three key waste management facilities in Bali Province: Tempat Olah Sampah Setempat (TOSS) Klungkung, Pengolahan Daur Ulang (PDU) Mengwi, and TPS 3R Kedonganan.
This field visit aimed to provide students with real-world insights into current waste management issues, the technologies being implemented, and the crucial roles of institutions and community participation in creating sustainable waste management systems. At TOSS Klungkung, students observed how waste is transformed into renewable energy using simple and eco-friendly thermal processes. At PDU Mengwi, they examined how inorganic waste is sorted and processed for recycling. Meanwhile, at TPS 3R Kedonganan, students saw firsthand how the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) are applied at the community level.
Through this activity, it is hoped that students will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of waste management systems and develop critical and solution-oriented perspectives on environmental challenges currently faced by the Balinese community.
