App-Based Waste Bank Digitalization: Environmental Engineering Students Turn Saba Village into a Model for Modern Waste Management University General
The Student Organization Capacity Strengthening Program (PPK Ormawa) led by the Environmental Engineering Student Association 2024 introduces a groundbreaking approach to waste management in Saba Village, Blahbatuh District, Gianyar Regency, Bali. With the theme “App-Based Waste Bank Digitalization and Organic Waste Management Innovation,” this program merges digital technology with sustainable methods through the "Pore Rangers" group and maggot cultivation, offering cutting-edge solutions for organic waste management.
Running from June to October 2024, the program involves 12 students from the 2021 and 2022 classes, led by team leader Jonas William and mentored by faculty advisor Ida Bagus Made Baskara Andika, S.Hut., M.Si. The program collaborates with partners such as the Bali Wastu Lestari Central Waste Bank and Sri Rejeki Central Waste Bank and utilizes the *Griya Luhu* app to support its digital operations.
During the program, the team successfully established five "Digital Waste Houses" across several customary villages, including Desa Adat Saba, Pinda, Banda, Bonbiyu, and Blangsinga. These digital waste centers are intended to serve as hubs for waste collection and education for local residents. Additionally, the program engaged 40 households in source-based waste management by installing biopore holes and implementing BSF maggot cultivation, which transforms organic waste into natural fertilizer.
The Head of Saba Village, Ketut Redhana, SP., praised this innovation as a significant step toward supporting Gianyar Regency’s government program to reduce waste using a wise, locally informed approach. The Study Program Coordinator, Dr. Ida Ayu Rai Widhiawati, ST., MT., highlighted that this project also strengthens community engagement with digital tools in waste management, thereby accelerating comprehensive waste reduction.
With the tagline "Reduce Waste, Maximize Benefits," this program has already shown concrete results, as all waste bank operations are now conducted digitally. Saba Village has become a model for other villages, showcasing innovative, effective, and technology-based waste management solutions.
